Quill & Steel

A SLOW-BURN WHY-CHOOSE DARK ROMANTASY SERIES

Quill & Steel

Beneath the empire, ancient wards are failing—and every alliance carries a cost.

Quill & Steel follows two women made expendable by different systems and forced together inside a brutal Academy. As ancient wards fail and hidden experiments surface, trust becomes rebellion, desire becomes leverage, and dangerous bonds begin to form around them.

Some systems fail quietly. Others take entire worlds with them.

Quill & Steel unfolds across an empire held together by ancient systems no one fully understands. Beneath the Academy and the Ashkari underground, the Ward Network is failing, while the powers that depend on it conceal the truth, weaponise knowledge, and sacrifice those least able to refuse.

At its centre are Mercy and Rogue, two women made expendable by different systems. Forced into partnership inside a brutal military institution, they form a bond the Academy cannot classify, while dangerous alliances and slow-burning attractions gather around them. Discipline, desire, and rebellion tighten together as the world beneath their feet begins to give way.

The world of Quill & Steel is held together by systems built around an ancient magical wound. Beneath the western mountains, the Ashkari preserve a rigid subterranean civilisation, while the Vaskar Empire expands through discipline and conquest. The occupied Kethari and independent Ventari resist erasure in different ways. At the border Academy, these powers meet under the appearance of peace—as the Ward Network keeping the land habitable begins to fail.

About the Author

Lyra Vale

Biography

Lyra Vale writes dark, emotional why-choose romantasy with a focus on complicated characters, intense relationships, and worlds shaped by power and survival.

Her writing journey began with a single story idea that grew too persistent to ignore. Based in Germany, she writes from an old timber-framed home and spends much of her time developing fictional worlds, working in her garden, and being supervised by her two small dogs, Zak and Atlas.

Why This Series

Having lived polyamorously for several years, Lyra Vale was drawn to why-choose romance through its exploration of relationships beyond traditional expectations. That experience inspired her to begin reading the genre and eventually shaped the kind of romantic dynamics she wanted to write herself.

Quill & Steel grew from her interest in women who refuse imposed choices, relationships forged under pressure, and found family as both refuge and rebellion. The series places those themes inside a dark fantasy world where power has consequences, trust must be earned, and survival changes everyone involved.

Writing Interests & Influences

Lyra Vale is drawn to dark fantasy worlds, emotionally consequential storytelling, slow-building relationships, and characters whose loyalties are tested by fear, power, and desire.

Her work explores coercion and resistance, identity, belonging, political control, found family, and the tension between intimacy and autonomy. She is especially interested in romances that develop through conflict, vulnerability, and deliberate choice rather than instant attraction or predetermined bonds.
